History
The Department of Materials Science and Engineering, College of Engineering at Seoul National University has grown as the world’s largest department of materials science and engineering which encompasses (Pan Materialia) the 3 major categories of materials including metal, ceramic and polymer materials after the foundation of Seoul National University in 1946.
In 1948, the Department of Metallurgy was reorganized as the Department of Metallurgical Engineering, which was established in 1946.
In 1982, the Department of Inorganic Materials Engineering was reorganized as the Department of Inorganic Materials Engineering The Department of Materials Engineering formed in 1969 was reorganized into the Department of Ceramics Engineering in 1975 and the Department of Inorganic Materials Engineering in 1982.
The Department Fiber Engineering formed in 1946 was reorganized into the Department of Fiber Polymer Engineering in 1993.
Existing Department of Metallurgical Engineering and Department of Inorganic Materials Engineering were combined into the Department of Materials Science and Engineering in 1995.
The Department of Fiber Polymer Engineering was integrated into the Department of Materials Science and Engineering in 2000. This resulted in a materials engineering department that covers metal, ceramic and polymer materials.
