Communicating in Science—Celia’s Tips for Scientific Talks

Biography

Celia Mathews Elliott is a science writer and technical editor with primary responsibilities in research administration in the Department of Physics at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. In addition to her departmental administrative duties, she has taught technical writing classes for undergraduate physics majors and advanced graduate students in science and engineering since 2000. She has presented four webinars for the American Chemical Society on scientific communications and proposal writing and has contributed to a technical-writing resource for the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. She answered questions on technical writing in two Reddit\science “Ask Me Anything” appearances, and her lectures on scientific communications have been downloaded by people from more than 90 countries. Among other professional awards, she was the American Physical Society’s Physics Haiku grand champion in 2004.

[Abstract]

Whether you’re a novice or an experienced speaker, this lecture should give you useful suggestions for making your scientific talks more meaningful, engaging, and persuasive. From how to analyze your prospective audience to how to arrange figures and text on a slide for maximum effect, from basic slide aesthetics to deciding how many slides you need for a 30-minute talk, you’ll gain useful insights that will make you more effective in communicating your scientific ideas and contributions to colleagues, bosses, students, clients, and funders.
