| Venue | #101, Bldg.43 (43동 101호) | Abstract | Solidification is a phase transformation from liquid to solid that occurs when the temperature of a liquid drops below its freezing point, a process known as supercooling. Depending on the degree of supercooling, the morphology of the solid/liquid interface varies, leading to different solidification microstructures such as planar, cellular, and dendritic structures. In this lecture, I will introduce the fundamental principles of solidification, including the driving forces behind the liquid-to-solid transformation and the formation of grains and dendrites. Using natural phenomena such as ice, snow, ice cream, and window frost as examples, I will illustrate how cooling rates influence solidification behavior. Additionally, I will discuss the application of these principles in the production of single-crystal turbine blades for aerospace gas turbine engines. Furthermore, I will examine how interface temperature and solidification morphology change with varying solidification velocities. At higher velocities, the dendritic interface transitions back to cellular and planar structures. I will explore the characteristics of high-velocity cellular solidification that occurs under rapid cooling conditions and discuss its relevance to rapid solidification microstructures formed by laser melting in additive manufacturing (AM). | Host | 한흥남 교수 (02-880-9240) |
