Abstract
Continuous casting is a mature and sophisticated technological process, used to manufacture over 95% of the world’s steel. Thus, even small improvements to understanding of defect formation in this process can make huge impacts on steel industries. Many defects in final steel products are related to complex multiphysics phenomena in the process, including turbulent multiphase flow, transport and capture of particles, magnetohydrodynamics, heat transfer, solidification, and thermo-mechanical behavior. Due to harsh environment of the process and the innumerable process variables, computational modeling is an ideal tool to quantify complex defect-related phenomena in the process. This talk will introduce several studies to develop computationally-intensive multiphysics models for more realistic and scientific investigations of various defect formation mechanisms, and to apply those models to improve this important manufacturing process.
