[Abstract]
Mg alloys have received attention as one of the most promising materials for weight savings due to their low density and high specific-strength. Recently, Sn-containing Mg alloy systems
have been suggested to meet the industrial needs for upgraded strength and anti-creep properties relative to conventionally available Mg alloys. However, Mg–Sn-based alloys suffer
from sluggish age-hardening response due to slow diffusion of Sn in Mg as well as the absence of transitional phases observable in well-known age-hardenable Al alloys. Here, we report that
the age-hardening of Mg–Sn-based alloy is considerably enhanced and also accelerated by Bi additions. A particular emphasis will be placed on characterizing Bi-induced microstructural
changes and specifying a crucial mechanism underlying such improvement in age-hardening.
