[Abstract]
Luminescent organic semiconductors are receiving attention due to their promising potential for optoelectronics applications, such as organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs), organic light-emitting transistors (OLETs), and organic solid-state lasers. Over the past decade, we have successfully synthesized luminescent organic semiconductors which can simultaneously engender outstanding charge-transport properties as well as high photoluminescence quantum yields in their solid-states. As a molecular design strategy different from the conventional rigid frame π-conjugated molecules, we have developed a concept of ‘self-assembling floppy molecules’ generating appropriate molecular stacking to afford both the enhanced light emission and charge transport. Particularly, various series of cyanostilbene and dicyanodistyrylbenzene molecules were synthesized and characterized to show outstanding charge-transporting properties together with bright solid-state luminescence (1-4). These promising properties indeed facilitate realization of advanced light-emitting devices – i.e., single-layered organic light-emitting transistors (OLETs), which can provide the simplest device structure that combines electroluminescence and on/off switching functions. In this presentation, I will provide comprehensive overview on our materials and device performances.
