Research Interests
Dr. Ki Tae Nam is a Professor of Materials Science and Engineering at Seoul National University and serves as a member of the Presidential Advisory Council on Science and Technology. He received the Outstanding PhD Thesis Award from MIT in 2007 and was honored with prestigious awards such as the Presidential Young Scientist Award in 2018, the POSCO TJ Park Prize in 2022, and the Order of Science and Technology Merit in 2023.
His PhD thesis was about the “virus-based battery” that has been highlighted as the first demonstration of virus based electrochemical devices. During his postdoc (2007-2010) at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, he studied peptide mimetic polymer to assemble two dimensional structures. Since 2010, His group at SNU continue to pioneer the research area of bioinspired material science to make new functional materials for energy and optical applications. Recent innovations include the development of CO2 utilization chemistry and the peptide based synthesis of chiral nanomaterials.
In addition to his academic pursuits, Dr. Nam plays a significant role in shaping science and technology policy. He contributed to R&D strategy and policy development as part of the Presidential Transition Committee in 2022 and has since served on the Presidential Advisory Council and special committees on carbon neutrality and strategic technologies.
Dr. Nam also promotes international collaboration in science and technology. He is a member of the Fulbright Foundation, Korean American Educational Commission, supporting bilateral exchange programs, and the SKERIC Science Diplomacy Academy, fostering cooperation between Sweden and Korea in education, research, and innovation.
