[Abstract]

Anisotropic nanomaterials such as liquid crystal elastomer (LCE) and their composites with functional inorganic nanorods and nanosheets combine intrinsic anisotropy and unique functionality, rendering them highly efficient actuators in response to external stimuli, such as light, heat, electric and magnetic fields.

Through pre-programming inhomogeneous local deformations in LCEs, we demonstrate shape morphing of 2D sheets into arbitrary 3D structures. By spatially encoding heat and magnetic field dually responsive, spindle-shaped LCE micro-actuators in isotropic elastomers, we broaden the material palette to program local and global responses for complex shapes through cooperative actuations of the locally distributed micro-actuators. By introducing chiral dopants in LCEs, we create LCE films with large biaxial Poisson’s ratio, leading to broadband (from near IR to UV wavelength), pixelated displays with no more than 20% strain via pneumatic actuations.
